‘Friction’ is a narrative structure in which short bursts of found and/or fictional texts are collaged together, ‘rubbing up’ against each other in order to invite, or ‘spark’, subjective interpretations, instead of foregrounding a conventional plot. The style was first credited to Elmo Siskin, a prolific crime writer from Fryup, who wrote more than two dozen novels. Two of his early works, ‘The Shine of Jade’ and ‘When The Tide Will Turn’, were loosely adapted into two popular Purple Wave movies — Naked Virgin Manhunt and Mermaids Attack! — respectively.
