Soviet cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev spends this New Year aboard the space station Mir. He left Earth on May 18, 1991 – before the coup, before Yeltsin was elected president of Russia, before Freddie Mercury died in November, and before the end of the war in Iraq. Krikalev’s hometown was still called Leningrad, not St. Petersburg. Krikalev will return on March 25, 1992, to a different country. He will be the last citizen of the now defunct Soviet Union.
