St Hilda – possibly derived from the Old Norse hylja, meaning to hide/conceal – is a mythical island in the Fryup islands chain, said to be cloaked in mist except for one day every nine years, when it becomes visible but still cannot be reached. The island appears on a number of early maps in various sizes and locations. In some myths, sailors who sight the island are said to come bewitched; in others, its appearance is regarded as a portent of doom.
