
A last bastion of Britishness is to be found in far-flung Heavenside (from the Old Norse hefnd, meaning ‘vengeance’. Fraying Union flags and a coil of barbed-wire warnings mark the ramshackle smallholding of a seething off-shoot of the Knaggs clan. In a region where family trees routinely come as prickly as gorse, the shacks are home to sworn enemies of their blackface-breeding cousins across the valley.
