The North Riding is almost entirely given up to the beautiful, the wild and the picturesque; with the exception of its north-east corner, now developed into a land of fire and smoke, it is a country of hills and valleys, swift rivers and rushing waterfalls, and within its confines one finds most of the beauties which have made the Yorkshire Dales famous the world over.
