The grey mullet is a handsome, chublike fish, that swims quite near the surface; and if you catch one you may well be proud, for of all sea fish he is the cunningest, and requies the finest tackle and the most cautious strategy.

Man resembles the cat in his hankering after that which eludes him; a woman, a difficult stroke at billiards, or a fish is the more prized after a fight for the mastery. I had never, before 1891, caught a grey mullet weighing more than a few ounces, and the chance of enjoying sport with large fish of that species was a delightful prospect.
