There is nothing in the aspect of Howsham or in the surroundings of Kirkham Priory which suggests evil or supernatural influences. The valley of the Derwent at this point is delightful in its picturesqueness and in the charm of its pastoral character. The river winds along by the grey ruins and through green meadows, and though the prospects are of a miniature nature owing to the sudden turns of the valley, they are very beautiful, and in some senses unique.
