REVELRY

Social union, frolic, not to say revelry, are things unimaginable in that grave society.  One would think that, when the day’s work was over, friendly families would meet of an evening for some little gaiety; but nothing of the kind ever happens.  Nobody dances, nobody sings glees or catches, nobody joins in games or any sort of mutual entertainment; even ‘sweet-hearting’ seems to go underground, though we will admit that the results are indisputable and not always according to law.

Lane-Poole/North-West, 1903
