When Van Halen burst out of the Hollywood club scene in 1978, they were the biggest, brashest, most over-the-top heavy rock band around. Their subsequent success has only amplified those tendencies. Describing the band’s views about their Van Halen roadshow, David Lee Roth asks, “Remember when you were in school, and the whole thing revolved around who had the biggest tires in back, who had the loudest stereo? Well, we never got past that phase.”
