HACKNESS

Hackness is situated in a pleasant valley, embosomed by surrounding hills, adorned with trees of the richest foliage.  The hills are lofty, and finely variegated, differing from each other in shape as well as ornament.  The prospects of Hackness have a charming variety; the hand of nature having not only enriched them with a profusion of sylvan embellishments, but also moulded them into such different forms and projections, as are at once picturesque and beautiful.

Cole/Scarborough, 1825
