THE NORTH RIDING PROJECT

The famous smurf scene in Sweet Tooth, in which Kola and her companions daub themselves from head to foot in blue paint in order to inveigle a place on the doctor’s lead float on carnival day, has spawned a smurf frenzy in Fryup ever since.  Local gift shops sell a range of smurf memorabilia; cafes offer sarsaparilla shakes and smurfberry ice cream; the local football team are nicknamed the Smurfs. An annual Smurf Day, every second Saturday in August, culminates in the crowning of a new Smurfette.
