An outcrop of fantastic and gnarled shapes weathered by time and the elements spiralled away to his left: the infamous and dreaded ravines which, for 1000 years, had been the refuge of rebels, murderers and armed bandits. Here, in places, were sheer drops of 500 feet. It was a devastated and dangerous region. Panther, deer, jackals and foxes found sanctuary in its valleys; cobras slithered through the elephant grass, and there had been times when men had been savaged by bears.
