The Viper Pass is an unclassified, single-track road that links Fryup with the hamlets of Roxby, Manby, Bielby and Lazenby. The road snakes across desolate moorland, plunging through steep ravines whose swollen rivers often render it impassable. The Viper Pass retains a notorious reputation for banditry, and was the location of the UK’s last recorded robbery by mounted highwaymen, in 1974.
