Cats laze in dappled sunlight or blink from low windows crowded with pot plants; shop assistants, unharassed during most of the week, gossip and wait for closing time – or seize upon the occasional customer with relief and serve him with smiling courtesy. If you meet a friend, you stop and talk, and your voices carry far on the clear, quiet air. In Pickering, it is always a summer afternoon.
