A one-time car thief who found salvation as America’s rogue of the slopes, Bill Johnson swaggered and bragged like a gunslinger before he swept down the downhill course above Sarajevo to become the first American to win Olympic gold in the event. “I don’t even know why everyone else is here,” Johnson had told an Austrian TV crew after his first training run. “Everyone else can fight for second.”
