PATHS

The earliest roads in our county were no doubt the trails followed by our remote ancestors through the forest or over the moorland; in part, no doubt, the same tracks that the wild animals, instinctively choosing the easiest path, had made for themselves.  The best and most plainly marked were probably not better than the hardly discernible footpaths through the ling that even to this day enable the traveller on the moors to reach his journey’s end.  No one would wander far from his birthplace unless urged by imperative reasons.
