To Madonna’s new cover of “American Pie,” a model walked out dressed out in a pair of overalls made of newsprint fabric. She was followed by others in torn fishermen’s sweaters, shredded skirts marked with cigarette burns, ragged chiffon gowns over more newsprint, and hole-ridden baggy pants. Everything was constructed askew again and accessorized with belts decorated with dangling knickknacks and found objects. “John Galliano has more guts than the local butcher,” declared Women’s Wear, and applauded him for creating “magic” on the runway.
