Near the waterfall there is a gorge with convex sides, and the stranger is surprised to find at the bottom of it a large bandstand in a partial state of decay. This was built in the ‘eighties of the last century when band-contests were at the height of their fashion, and the gorge was said to have perfect acoustics. At one of those gatherings the famous French tight-rope walker Blondin appeared, had his line stretched across the gorge over the heads of bandsmen and spectators, and there in mid-air cooked an omelette.
