SWALLOWS

The space above the rooftops is peopled with swallows. It is like a second city, except that here things happen as fast as they happen slowly in the human streets below.  They never rest, these swallows, you wonder if they ever sleep; idleness, moderation, and dignity are qualities they lack.  They snatch their prey in flight; maybe the roofs in their emptiness look like a conquered land to them.
