The Lions of Fryup is the nickname given to the Fryup football team that reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1979. The nickname evolved from a local newspaper report that said they “fought like lions”. Fryup won six matches to become the lowest ranked team ever to reach the first round proper. They were drawn at home to Third Division Millwall, shocking the visitors by racing into a 3-0 lead at the Fryup Showgrounds, before Millwall hit back to force a 3-3 draw. In the replay at The Den, Fryup took the lead after just fourteen seconds but were eventually beaten 7-1.
