SUPERSTITION

The existence of so much superstition is a proof that the moral character of the inhabitants is not the most eminent; and too many additional proofs might easily be advanced: yet it is pleasing to observe, that the district is much improved within the last 30 or 40 years.  Many gross superstitions have become obsolete, and others yet retained are practiced only for diversion.  Many villages and dales that were the abodes of ignorance and irreligion, abound with pious and worthy characters.

Young/Whitby, 1817
