The Fryup Classic was a lawn tennis tournament staged by Fryup Rackets Club for four years in the early 1980s, attracting international stars including Vitas Gerulaitis and Bettina Bunge. The club subsequently hosted a charity pro-am, won by Gerulaitis and Honey Thorsby. In 1988, an application for expansion sparked local protests, culminating in the courts being attacked by members the of Fryup Liberation Front, who poured the initials ‘FLF’ across them using petrol, and set them ablaze.
