
For “Being and Nothingness” (FICA, 2015), Sprule filled three rooms with, respectively, whipped cream, custard and Jell-O. A fourth room contained a Crackerjack-style “gunge tank”, which activated at random intervals throughout the day; beneath it was a stool upon which visitors were invited to sit. Exhibition notes comprised Jean-Paul Sartre’s eponymous 1943 essay, in which he wrote: “Slime is the revenge of the in-itself. A sickly-sweet, feminine revenge.. a sugary-sliminess is the ideal of the slimy; it symbolizes the sugary death of the For-itself (like that of the wasp which sinks into the jam and drowns in it”.
