To mark the opening of Fryup’s first Indian restaurant, the Fryup Mahal, in 2012, its chefs created the ‘Frindaloo’ – dubbed the world’s hottest curry after tipping the scales at a scorching six million Scoville units. Trying the curry – made with a locally-developed chilli called the Killer Bee – became such a rite of passage among locals that it has remained on the menu. Chefs prepare it wearing goggles and surgical masks, and each order must come with a signed disclaimer. Winners get their money back, plus a certificate and a tee-shirt. In 2015, the ‘Frindaloo’ featured in a special international episode of the Food Network’s ‘Man v. Food’: food won. In fact, so far only one diner, the teenage competitive eating champion Treasure Siskin, has managed it: she woofed her ‘Frindaloo’ down in fifteen minutes before coolly asking for a bowl of ice cream.
