Environment makes the moorsiders hardy, cautious, thrifty, stoical, and self-reliant. On the other hand, they are thereby rendered hard, suspicious, taciturn, quarrelsome, and implacable. When a man is his own chief companion, this solitude makes for strength of mind and happiness so long as all is well within, but should it be otherwise then it makes for the worst.
