Some minor industries have vanished. Lead-smelting has left Swaledale and the alum industry has migrated to the coalfields. The hand-knitters of Hawes could not persist against machine hosiery. Kelp-getting and burning on the Cleveland coast no longer provides a miserable subsistence. Whitby as a centre of the whale fishery was the last stronghold of wooden ships, now superseded by the larger and more economical steel vessels of Teesside.
