A drawing from Pettibon’s 1983 Capricious Missives features two high school portraits, each an epitome of 80s-style preppiness. Yet the words “Double Suicide” hover overhead, transforming these standard yearbook images into those circulated by the shocked parents of teen suicides. With their clean-cut good looks, they are poster children for misunderstood youth, for the discrepancy between popular idealizations and their more sinister realities.
