
Dallol was a dead place and looked as if it had been for some time. It was clear to me that no-one was meant to conquer an environment like this one, where the Earth’s crust was still in turmoil and primordial elements bubbled from the ground. It was as if Mother Nature allowed visitors but permanent settlement was actively discouraged. Over a period of six years, the annual mean of the daily maximum temperature recorded at Dallol was 41oC. It was just too extreme. Somehow I felt uneasy about even treading this primeval land.
