The maps created by Art & Language included the “Map of a Thirty-Six Square Mile Surface Area of the Pacific Ocean West of Oahu” – in fact, just an empty square; the “Map of Itself’, a large square divided into a grid of smaller squares; the “Map to Indicate Countries According to Ability to Understand Reality as Hyperrealistic”; and the “Map to Not Indicate” series, including a map of the US which lists all the geographic areas that the artists have removed from the map, leaving only Iowa and Kentucky, which are outlined and labelled but, floating like islands, have lost geographical relevance, metaphorically cast adrift from their own cartographic moorings.
