Lucy de Thweng, an orphan, and heiress to a quarter of the Brus barony, was married to William Latimer at the age of fifteen, but was later abducted from their manor at Kirkburn, and carried on an intrigue with Nicholas, Lord of Whorlton, a leading member of North Riding society, who may have been involved in her abduction, leading to a quarrel of considerable violence. Nicholas was thrown in York Castle prison, whilst Lucy, who produced one son by this irregular alliance, agreed to “receive purgation” for persistent adultery and incest, to pay £10 towards the fabric of York Minster, and to pledge not to commit carnal sin.
