I left my hometown when I was nineteen. I came to California from Rockford, Illinois, to visit my grandfather, who was very sick.  I had one suitcase packed with my things.  I thought that when you lived in California, everything was free and beautiful and you lived on the beach, you know.  It was the eighties.  I had the delusion that everything was like it was in the movies.
