Lonely and remote from the world as Eskdale is, it has notwithstanding been lately the scene of one of the most atrocious and diabolical murders recorded in the annals of crime. The unfortunate victim was Mrs. Robinson, who, with her husband, resided in a quaint old-fashioned farmhouse situated in a romantic portion of the vale. The brutal murderer escaped the fangs of justice only to perish soon after in the most miserable manner, and in the agonies of dissolution confessed his guilt.
