Consanguinity in marriage is a great factor in the causation of insanity, and these moorland people intermarried so much that the maze of relationship was more than bewildering. One never knew where it began or where it ended. Nieces were sisters-in-law, brothers-on-law were stepsons, and so on. I felt I was going mad myself in threading my way through this labyrinth of relationship. I was for ever discovering new complications.
