
‘Eyes glaze. Brows perspire. Arms flail.’ So reads the description of this chilli on the PuckerButt Pepper Company website, developed by ‘Founder, President, Mad-Scientist & Chef’ Smokin’ Ed Currie in the humid Deep South climate of South Carolina. Ten years in the making, the Carolina Reaper, which first appeared in 2011 under the strain umber ‘HP22B’, was bred by crossing sweet habanero and Naga Viper chillies. It was awarded the Guinness World Record for the hottest chilli in November 2013, defeating the Naga Viper.
