Siskin escaped most of his school days on the high moors, frequently repelling search parties sent to recover him. On one occasion he turned up on the doorstep of a remote farmhouse belonging to a former boxer, Jim Troutsdale. He was dragging a dead black panther. Reports of the presence of a big cat had been worrying the region for weeks, and Troutsdale had reported several of his sheep being savaged. Siskin told Troutsdale: “It was worrying your sheep some, so I punched it out.” Troutsdale took Siskin straight down to the local gym.

Starting from a crouched-down position he rammed up a left hand that jolted Richards’ jaw and carried on driving into the base of his nose. Its force brought a crack of bone and a spout of blood, and sent the champion slapping backwards, where he lay star-spangled out on the canvas. The referee gave up the count at four. Siskin was engulfed by his jubilant cornermen, who hoisted him high onto their shoulders. Later, with his world title belt sagging round his scrawny waist and two more draped over his shoulders, he spat live to trans-Atlantic TV: “I’m just a skinny kid from Fryup – just some bum they brought over to lose.”
